What is the Senshi Nokkiru Dojo, anyway?

The Senshi Nokkiru Dojo (SND) is group of martial arts schools located mostly in Indiana and Michigan, with a few students and instructors in other states. We practice and teach both standing and grappling martial arts. The standing style we train in is called kyokushin karate.

Kyokushin is the rigorous style founded by world famous karate master Masutatsu Oyama (1923-1994). This karate style has long been considered to be a superior standing defense style when compared to other, traditional Japanese styles. Master Oyama had over 250 "challenge" matches around the world from the late 40s to the mid 60s. He did this only after challenging the traditional Japanese karate masters of his day, to which he received no takers. Master Oyama drew from his experience in Japanese Goju Ryu (6th dan) and Shotokan (2nd dan), as well as Chinese Kempo and Judo (4th dan), where he attained high degrees in each of these systems, in a different time when high rank actually meant something. M. Oyama also drew from experience, such as the addition of the use of the knees and elbows from the Muay Thai system. The kyokushin system of Mas. Oyama has had many successful break away schools and systems of international stature, such as: Ashihara Karate, Seido Karate, Worldwide Oyama Karate, Shidokan Karate, Seidokan Karate, Kishi Karate, Kokorokan, and many, many others. Many of the "big names" in the international standing combative tournaments today (K-1, Sabaki Challenge, Shidokan Tournament) have their roots in kyokushin karate.

While our kyokushin training is a major portion of our dojo training, we also place a major emphsasis on the practice of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and judo. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is especially suited to defending oneself when being grabbed, knocked down, or thrown to the ground, which is where a majority of all real-life self-defense confrontations end. The judo portion of our training is simply for a few, good throws.

While our training is difficult it does produce results in the students, both in the dojo and away from the school. Students who regularly attend classes will develop a greater self-discipline than can be found in any other endeavor. At the Senshi Nokkiru Dojo we hold on to some of the traditions that have been set down before us while also being contemporary in our interactions, training methods, and approach.

The Senshi Nokkiru Dojo was founded un-officially in 1986 by Sensei George Arndt at Purdue University, West Lafayette (main campus). In the early 1990s a student of Sensei Arndt's, Chad McAlexander, opened a branch school near Ft. Wayne. He, along with his brother Sempei Brad McAlexander, now run both the Ft. Wayne and Lafayette schools, while Sensei Arndt is the head instructor of the New Carlisle school, assisted by Sensei Tracy Crump.
